San Jacinto Festival and Battle Reeinactment

Booming cannons, cracking musket fire, thundering hooves and desperate battle cries resound across the San Jacinto Battleground as hundreds of history reenactors recreate the events leading up to Texas winning its independence at the decisive Battle of San Jacinto. See the image and video galleries below to get a glimpse of the day's activities.

This dramatic battle reenactment is the centerpiece of the admission-free San Jacinto Day Festival, held on the grounds surrounding the San Jacinto Monument. Sponsored by the San Jacinto Museum of History, Texas Parks & Wildlife and the San Jacinto Volunteers, the festival is a full day of music, entertainment, food, games and fun set amidst living history.

Presented by the San Jacinto Volunteers and other living history organizations from across the state, the reenactment dramatizes the decisive battle where General Sam Houston led his Texian soldiers to victory over the Mexican Army eventually leading to almost one million square miles of Mexican territory becoming a part of the United States. The reenactors dramatically interpret the Runaway Scrape, the cannon duel and the final battle between the two forces. Best of all, the reenactors are all very accessible and knowledgeable, happy to share their knowledge of the Texas War of Independence and frontier life.

Houston Yacht Club Hosts Elissa Regatta

Houston Yacht Club presents its 28th annual Elissa Regatta for the benefit of the tall ship Elissa. This event not only raises money for the Elissa but also raises awareness of our sailing heritage.

The Elissa is an iron-hulled sailing ship built in Scotland in 1877, and is now a National Historical Landmark as well as the official Tall Ship of Texas. She is a three masted barque, having square and fore-and-aft sails on her fore and mainmasts and only fore-and-aft sails on her mizzenmast, with nineteen sails covering over one-quarter of an acre in area.

The Elissa is housed at the Texas Seaport Museum and is owned and operated by the Galveston Historical Foundation. The maintenance and upkeep of the Elissa costs more than $300,000 per year.

Proceeds from the Elissa Regatta Weekend will not only help restore the ship but also fund exhibits, community activities and educational programs in connection with the Elissa for youth and adults.

Texas Independence Relay

City Of La Porte Firefighter John Glick, an avid ultra runner, is committed to running the 200 miles in its entirety.

City Of La Porte Firefighter John Glick, an avid ultra runner, is committed to running the 200 miles in its entirety.

Experience your own victory at the Texas Independence Relay! Your legs (40 relay legs) will carry you along the 200 mile course from historic Gonzales, home of the Come & Take It skirmish, to the site of the storied final battle at the San Jacinto Monument!

Register and find out more on their website: http://texasindependencerelay.com/

The Challenge

The TIR is composed of 40 relay legs of various lengths, totaling over 200 miles. The course starts in Gonzales, where the spark of the Texas Revolution took place, and it finishes at the San Jacinto Monument, where Texas Independence was won! To tackle this formidable task, your team will be composed of up to 12 members (your choice!), and you’ll have an exceptional time either furthering good friendships or making new ones! You’ll encourage each other along the way while you visit the small cities of Gonzales, Shiner, Moulton, Flatonia, Schulenburg, Weimar, Borden, Columbus, Altair, Eagle Lake, Wallis, Orchard, Simonton, and Fulshear. Then, you’ll make your way through the paramount city of Houston, experiencing it in a way you never have before! Racing on a team with your friends in this unique format over an incomparable span of Texas steeped with momentous history all amounts to a GREAT time that you’ll fondly remember for years to come! This all takes place over Saturday and Sunday, March 23 – 24, 2013 (and don’t forget the party on Friday, March 22!). Come and take it… if you have what it takes!

Course Description

Gonzales is an exceedingly welcoming town, rich with history and attractive to tourists looking to escape the big city! Your entire team will run a small loop together around downtown, marking the commencement of your journey. You’ll enjoy picturesque rolling hills on perfect relay roads as you journey over rural dirt roads and Sam Houston’s Tree! After leaving Gonzales, you’ll get a taste of smaller Texas towns with exceptionally large hearts! Shiner, Moulton, Flatonia, Schulenburg, and Weimar, you’ll appreciate each town’s individual flavor, but you will also note that they all possess a distinct relaxing quality. By the time your team reaches Columbus, the sun will be retiring for the day.

Eagle Lake, Wallis, Orchard, Simonton, and Fulshear will be sleeping communities as you pass through (though at least a few will stay up to curiously observe your unrelenting journey through the night). Pressing on tirelessly toward the finish, you and your team will follow the trail of little flashing lights (other runners).

When you begin to make your way through Cinco Ranch on the west side of Houston, you’ll notice the early indicators that a new day is underway. You’ll also become aware that you’re crossing the threshold between country and city. Between here and downtown, you’ll traverse paths that wind through pleasing parks (George Bush Park, Terry Hershey Park, Memorial Park, and the Buffalo Bayou). You’ll admire stately homes in well-preserved neighborhoods, and then, you’ll stride through Houston’s very downtown, passing right by reflective sky scrapers and making your way around the Toyota Center!

After exiting downtown, you’ll navigate through an industrial section of Houston that is quickly followed by quiet neighborhoods. Then you’ll march due east towards the vast Ship Channel – all culminating with a celebratory finish in La Porte at the San Jacinto Battleground and Monument!

What is Sidewalk Saturday? Every Saturday, artists, crafters and the like sell their creations on the sidewalks of Main Street in old La Porte. The creations are as unique as the creators themselves and range from egg shell mosaics, photography, hand made jewelry, funkified art, recycled/repurposed art, charcoal sketches, acrylic paintings, bead making and the list goes on. This event is family friendly and free (which makes it even more family friendly!!)

If you would like to participate as an Artist/crafter (or know someone who would) ...there is no charge to set up a table/display, there is no "pre-commitment"....if you want to come out and play with us...show up there is plenty of space. If you want more info, feel free call Kelly Price at 713-824-2504.

Thanks for being part of the grass roots development of Sidewalk Saturday!
