LA PORTE HISTORIC BUS TOUR
On the first Saturday of every month, you have the opportunity to dive deep into the heart of Texas history. The all new La Porte Historic Bus Tour begins at the majestic San Jacinto Monument. There, we will explore the rich displays of the San Jacinto Museum and take the staggering four-hundred eighty foot elevator ride to the Monument’s top observation deck just below the two-hundred twenty ton Lone Star of Texas. While at the Monument, we will get the opportunity to visit the Jesse H. Jones Theatre to watch “TEXAS FOREVER!!” and experience how the West was really won.
The next stop on the tour will be La Porte’s historic Main Street just in time to break for a little lunch and shopping at Main Street Trade Days. You can peruse the eclectic shops and eateries, as well as enjoy a large variety of local craft & artisan vendors, antiques, cottage foods and some of the best BBQ in the area!
After lunch and shopping, we will meet at the City of La Porte’s Original City Hall for some cookies and the continuation of our trek through history. The tour will then head over to the recently re-built Historical Colored School House where an authentic one-room school house lesson will be given, and you can experience a little taste of early 20th century school days.
The tour will then make its way over for a quick look at La Porte’s vintage grainery. Although, the location is now Backbay Emporium, it still host a number of historic artifacts from our bay-area past.
The last major stop of the tour takes us to the La Porte Bay Area Heritage Society’s Sylvan Beach Depot Museum and Library where a vast array of La Porte’s historical stories can be uncovered along with a plethora of vintage photos and artifacts. The Heritage Society docent will share little-known stories of La Porte’s past and shed some light on the most important events that shaped life here on the bay.
On our journey back to the San Jacinto Battlegrounds, we will pass by and discuss the history of Sylvan Beach, Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, the Sterling Mansion and the City of Morgan’s Point down to the Houston Ship Channel.
